In the lawsuit filed against Eskişehir Prison in 2018 due to the alleged torture of four child prisoners, the prison director was sentenced to imprisonment while the correction officers were acquitted. This decision showed that the problem of impunity in allegations of ill-treatment and torture in prisons continues.

According to CISST's 2022 report, it was emphasized that the basic needs of children in prison are not met, they remain disconnected from the outside world and cannot participate in social activities. Prison does not provide suitable conditions for children.

Children in prison have traumatic experiences. Arzu (34) states that her child was often searched by opening his diaper. Arzu's 21-month-old son Onur was not sent to the infirmary for 15 days despite falling off a bunk bed on his head. Arzu rebels: "What are so many children doing in prison?"

     Violations of the rights of women and children imprisoned in Turkey contravene international standards such as the UN's Bangkok and Tokyo Rules.    The UN report recommends non-imprisonment measures for pregnant women and mothers with dependent children. In Turkey, however, these rules are not enforced and women prisoners are kept in prisons unnecessarily.

It is observed that the physical and social development of children staying with inmate mothers is weakened due to the crowded structure of the wards. Children experience various developmental problems.

    The husband of Emine Güçlüer, a teacher with a state of emergency decree, who is imprisoned in Edirne L Type Prison with her baby, stated that there are 15-16 people in wards for three people and that his wife has to sleep on the floor with four babies, saying that these conditions are against human rights.    He demanded that his wife and child be released from prison as soon as possible.

     The parents of 11-year-old Elif Sinem, who has Down syndrome, and 7-year-old Yahya Süleyman are in prison.      Elif Sinem has had 8 kidney surgeries and now her mother is in prison at a time when she needs her mother the most. Elif has been fatherless for 7 years and motherless for 4 years. Every night they cry "Where is my mother?" but there is no one to help them.

People imprisoned for their legal activities... Couples like Nurcan and Abdülkadir Arslan are being punished without concrete evidence to prove their guilt.A family was falsely accused of ByLock and Bank Asya and sentenced to 6 years and 3 months in prison. Six innocent children were left behind longing for their parents.

Semra Banko, a housewife trying to cross to Greece, was pushed back with her 18-month-old son Ahmet Arif and was arrested on August 24, 2023 and sent to Edirne Prison. Banko was sentenced to 6 years and 3 months in prison for having an account at Bank Asya and for being a member of a shut-down dershan. During her detention, the mother and baby were given only water and no food for a day. Now he is separated from his mother.

    Hilal Uysal was first imprisoned in Şakran Prison in 2018, when her daughter Zülal was 1.5 years old, and spent 7 months in Şakran Prison. Hilal Uysal was arrested again on November 24, 2021. Zülal's father has also been in prison for 6 years. Zülal had to be separated from her mother on December 12, 2022 because she was 6 years old. Children should not have to go through this drama!

  Yavuz Esat Betül Akgün, a 3-year-old child and her mother, a teacher, was forced to fight the coronavirus in a cramped prison cell.    An innocent child is serving her sentence for a crime she did not commit. Their home is like a funeral home, they are waiting for their child.

Another mother's light was extinguished in prison... Edibe Tatar, a teacher and mother of 3 children, was arrested again on June 14, 2023 after having previously spent 9 months in prison for non-criminal reasons. These children, whose husband has also been in prison for 5 years, are now trying to hold on to life.

Ferah Oktan, the mother of 9-year-old Safiye and 17-month-old Asude, was sentenced to 6 years and 3 months in prison and arrested on August 9 for working at a closed school and being a member of a trade union.

Asuman Birinci, the wife of Eyüp Birinci, a Turkish teacher with a state of emergency decree, whose torture was recognized by the Constitutional Court, was also arrested on May 29, 2023. The mother of four was struggling to heal the wounds of her husband, who had been tortured and imprisoned for 6 years, while she was in financial difficulties. Now she too is in prison.


Being in prison means being subjected to strip searches, living in a concrete room with only a plastic table, chair and television. 

For the child, having no relatives other than the mother increases the destructive effects of this environment.

Innocence's Power

Sick detainees are people with serious health conditions that require treatment, but often have limited access to such treatment in prison conditions. This poses a major human rights challenge and States have an obligation to make special arrangements for sick prisoners. The right of prisoners to fair access to health care should be seen as part of the right to life.

Zieke gedetineerden zijn mensen met ernstige gezondheidsproblemen die behandeling nodig hebben, maar hebben vaak beperkte toegang tot dergelijke behandeling in gevangenisomstandigheden. Dit vormt een grote uitdaging voor de mensenrechten en staten zijn verplicht om speciale regelingen te treffen voor zieke gevangenen. Het recht van gevangenen op eerlijke toegang tot gezondheidszorg moet worden erkend als onderdeel van het recht op leven.

Zieke gevangenen hebben in de gevangenis vaak beperkte toegang tot medische zorg.

Hasta tutuklular, sağlık durumları ciddi ve tedavi gerektiren kişilerdir, ancak hapishane koşullarında bu tedavilere erişimleri genellikle kısıtlıdır. Bu durum, insan hakları açısından büyük bir soruna yol açmaktadır ve devletlerin hasta tutuklulara yönelik özel düzenlemeler yapma zorunluluğunu vardır. Mahkumların sağlık hizmetlerine adil erişim hakkı, yaşam hakkının bir parçası olarak görülmelidir.



Hasta tutukluların hapishanede tedaviye erişimleri genellikle sınırlıdır.

Gülden Aşık

Gülden Aşık was sentenced to 7 years and 6 months in prison as a result of the Gulen Movement investigations and was imprisoned after the verdict was approved. Although she has advanced cancer, she was given a "she can stay in prison" report. Her family is demanding that Aşık be released due to her health condition.

Yusuf Özmen

Yusuf Özmen was detained in Erzurum in 2018, he was held in detention for 11 days in a sick state. Yusuf Özmen had stage 3 cancer at the time and his disease progressed to stage 4 within 20 months of his imprisonment. The tumor spread to his lungs and around his aorta.

Hanife Arslan

Hanife Arslan, a 76-year-old prisoner in Van Type T Prison, has many diseases, including COPD, stomach disease and high blood pressure.  Arslan's son: "Every day my mother has to go down the stairs to go to the toilet. Sometimes when she can't get help, she doesn't eat to avoid going to the toilet because she can't go up and down the stairs."

Yazgül Dural is a prisoned police officer.Yazgül Dural suffers from hydrocephalus, loss of balance and needs treatment. Her father-in-law İsmail Dural:Is there not a single conscientious person in this country who would give house arrest to my sick daughter-in-law? Yazgül Dural was sentenced at Şanlıurfa 5th ACM on the possibility that she "might have used ByLock".

Mehmet Ali Uçar

Lawyer Mehmet Ali Uçar, who is visually impaired and has haemophilia, was given reports dated June 2018, May 2021, July 2021, September 2022 stating that he ‘cannot stay in prison’. Uçar is not released.

Mehmet Parlak

10 years ago, Mehmet Parlak, who had a kidney transplant, dropped from 63 kg to 40 kg due to a diarrhoea that lasted for 17 months in Hatay and Sincan Prisons,.He was in intensive care and on dialysis. His only kidney works at 30%.

Halil Karakoç

Halil Karakoç is an 82-year-old retired religious worker. He takes handfuls of pills every day for his diabetes, cholesterol, heart and stomach ailments. Sick, old and unable to meet his own needs, Karakoç has been in prison for 1.5 years.

Muharrem Cankılıç 

Muharrem Cankılıç, who has been imprisoned since 2022 for trumped up reasons that the ECHR does not recognize as a crime, is not in good health: She said that she is sure that the ECHR will rule a violation, but she is afraid that her father will not be able to see it, and she asked for our voices to be heard.

Ünal Üneş 

Unal Üneş, a 65-year-old retired teacher, was found guilty on the grounds that he was a member of Kimse Yok Mu Association and witness testimonies. Üneş, who has been held in CELL since November 2017, has been having a hard time in prison due to his deteriorating health and a stent in his heart. He has been unlawfully detained for 6 years and 9 months. Since August 20, his right to probation has been violated!

Hatice Yıldız

Hatice Yıldız is a 70-year-old old woman. Because she sent money to her daughter and her daughter's friend in prison, she was declared a terrorist and carried from the hospital on a stretcher and thrown into prison.

Emre Turan 

Emre Turan, ateacher who was sentenced to 6 years and 10 months for working in a private education course  that was shut down with a state of emergency decree, is suffering from stage 3 ulcerative colitis. His wife Buket Turan: "Release my husband who is one step away from colon cancer."

Özge ÖZBEK 

Sick detainee Özbek has a brain tumor, epilepsy, asthma and vertigo. She was taken from the hospital and arrested 3 days after undergoing open brain surgery in 2020.

  Güler Çetinkaya was arrested in Bursa after an investigation was launched against her in Eskişehir for working as a teacher in a closed down dershane.    Her husband Yavuz Çetinkaya has been in prison for 4 years. Two innocent children, aged 4 and 7, crying "I want my mom", have been left without a mother and a father!

On Saturday morning, September 7 2023, Koray Vural, a businessman living in Tajikistan for 29 years, was kidnapped in front of his restaurant in Dushanbe and taken to Turkey.His family is worried.

İsmet Özçelik was kidnapped from Malaysia and brought to Turkey in 2017 despite being under the protection of the United Nations. 

Özçelik, who was arrested and sent to prison, suffers from heart disease and diabetes. 


Cihan Özkan 

was kidnapped from Kosovo in 2018 and has been detained for 5 years. He has been held in a cell in Marmara Prison, and although his release date has already come and gone, he has been prevented from being released by not being granted probation for months.

Gökhan Türkmen 
is detained in Ankara Sincan Prison. Türkmen was released in Antalya 9 months after being kidnapped. Then he was  detained as if he had just been found.  His statements are as follows:

 I was tortured, harassed and threatened for 271 days. I was tortured for 9 months.



Orhan İnandı, an educator who was tortured after being kidnapped by MIT in Kyrgyzstan, was sentenced to 21 years in prison.


Gülistan Doku, 

a university student who was abducted in Tunceli and never heard from again, has been missing for 1345 days.



Sunay Elmas, an educator whose illegal interrogation was attended by Hakan FİDAN, the head of Turkish National Intelligence Service, has been missing for 7 years. 

The authorities have not made a single statement on this issue.


A Chaldean couple living in Şırnak were abducted 3.5 years ago. Shimuni Diril's dead body was found 3 months later. Hurmüz Diril is still missing. 

Their daughter Gülcan Diril says her parents were victims of a planned murder.


Mehmet BAL 

has been missing for 3 years. His son emphasizes that they have applied to all necessary state institutions to find his father and underlines that they have not seen a positive approach from any state institution since the first day.

Yusuf Bilge TUNÇ
was abducted 4 years ago on August 6, 2019 in Ankara Gimat in a black Transporter.TUNÇ's location  has been unknown since then. His father Mustafa Tunç: 

"If he was in prison you would go and visit him, there is nothing more painful than not knowing what happened...!"


Zabit Kişi, who was kidnapped from Kazakhstan and tortured for 108 days: 

At the place where I was abducted, they tortured me by stripping me naked, they crushed my toes, my ribs cracked, they stepped on my handcuffed hands with their feet, I have loss of sensation.


Was Ayhan Oran summoned to the country to be executed? 

Oran, a former MIT employee, was summoned to Turkey in June 2016 while on duty in Greece, suspended on July 17, dismissed on August 2, kidnapped on November 1 and has not been heard from since.

Yasin Ugan, 

who appeared at the Ankara Central Police Station 7 months after his abduction, described the torture he was subjected to in court.

 "I lived with a bag over my head for 6 months, I was red in the face, I was severely tortured.

Art teacher Mine Işıktaş was sentenced to 6 years and 10 months in prison for allegedly using ByLock. Although her file is under review at the Court of Cassation, she was sent to prison with her 16-month-old daughter before her sentence was finalized.

Ayşe Ercengiz, a classroom teacher with 3 children, was arrested two days ago and sent to Tarsus Prison to execute a 25-month prison sentence for depositing money in Bank Asya, despite having a 20-month-old baby born prematurely and breastfed.

Despite the ECtHR's declaration in September 2023 that using ByLock is not a crime, Yasemin and Kasım Melizci have been in Sincan Prison since January 2021 for using ByLock. Yasemin Melizci is detained with her 4-year-old daughter Saime.

Hopeful Waiting for Three Children Whose Parents Are in Prison

Ayşe Meleş was sentenced to 7 years in prison after the student dormitory where she worked was shut down. Her husband Mehmet has been imprisoned since 2015 due to a witness statement. Their children, Selma, Erkan, and Serdar, lost both parents when Ayşe was also imprisoned in 2020.
